Synthetic dreadlock extensions are created with pre-made dreads that are braided into your natural hair. The dreads are made of backcombed, steam-sealed synthetic hair and are extremely durable. You can supply your own, but generally we prefer to make them ourselves. You can request to have them made thick or thin, with a smooth outer surface or a rough, scruffy one, and in any color imaginable, from natural to neon. The dreads can match your natural hair color, as shown here, or be a completely different shade, as shown in this photo. Dreads are available in solid colors as well as two-color swirls and transitions (dreads with different-colored ends).Although we call them dreads, dreadlock extensions are completely non-damaging to your own hair and will not cause your hair to actually lock up. Dread extensions last for 2-4 months, and take 2-4 hours (for double-ended dreads) or 6-7 hours (for pinchbraided dreads) to install. More detailed aftercare instructions for dreads can be found here.
To install synthetic dreadlock extensions, we use the "double-ended dread method". The dreads are made as one long piece with an undreaded section in the middle. The undreaded section is braided with your own hair, leaving one end of the dread with a braid on part of it, and a braid hanging out of the top of the braid that covers up your own hair. An extremely fast and secure method which can be seen here and in most of the dread-extension photos on this site.
For those who want to try putting in their own dread extensions, we also sell batches of double-ended dreads ready for use! Each set includes 60 double-ended dreads, to your color, length, and style specifications. Here's how one of our clients put in her dreads!
We also offer services for wearers of natural permanent dreadlocks. There's a lot more to dreads than just "not brushing your hair"!
